Marine aquariums, by and large, use copious amounts of live rock as the basis of not only their landscape, but also a significant portion of their biological filtration. While the giant rock wall does serve a purpose, such as providing a place for grazing fish to eat and a nice place to hide, they are unsightly and are losing ground to the minimalist approach. In the less is more aquascape, aquarists are using fewer rocks to really open up the swimming space within the tank. Not only is this good for fish who need the extra wiggle room, but it is good for water flow and they just plain look better. Of course, this all hinges on whether the hobbyist can pull off the look or not.
