Despite their names, lawnmower blennies aren’t really all that great at mowing the proverbial reef lawn. While they do constantly graze on the rocks and glass, they mostly attack film-like microalgae instead of the longer, tougher hair-type algae. This is one of the biggest disappointing facts about this blenny, as most hobbyists think that they are a quick and fun solution to an algae outbreak. Unfortunately, the algae usually remains untouched and the blenny slowly starves to death after it eats up all of its normal food. For hair algae problems, critters like turbo snails and sea hares are the most effective grazers, but obviously they aren’t without their own drawbacks.
