Did you know that hydrogen peroxide has been used as an effective treatment for algae and other reef aquarium ailments? In fact, many hobbyists have reported dosing the antiseptic with amazing results. As it is dosed, the hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent that increases the oxidation reduction potential (ORP). An elevated ORP has been shown time and time again to help rid aquariums of various issues, such as hair algae, slime algae, and unwanted bacteria. Of course, there can be too much of a good thing. If the ORP levels are too high, beneficial bacteria can easily suffer, and even larger organisms will experience issues. So, if you start dosing hydrogen peroxide, it’s best to take it slow (really slow), and increase the dosage slowly until the problem you are experiencing goes away.
